more school hoops
In order to gain "official entrance" into school, I had to take a math competency exam, as the math course I took in Pennsylvania was not accepted due to it being too long ago. I scheduled the test at 9am, thinking, "well, it can't be that hard, and they let you use a calculator... I can do this."
Apparently, I couldn't. I bombed the test... HARD. "They told me, no problem you can take it again next month." Next month isn't going to work. So I begged and pleaded, and the lady said, "Ok, you can take it next week, here's some study sheets." I went back to my car and felt sorry for myself... then I pulled myself together and went in, thinking I could still talk to the financial aide people about the summer courses I'm supposed to take.. (prereqs for the classes I need to take in the fall). Apparently, I can't do that either. You can't even talk to the financial aide people till you register for the summer classes, and you can't do that until the 15th!
Ah well.... I'll try to pass the test next week, and if not, I'll just take a bonehead math class. :)
Then I had the interview with the vet clinic... She took me in, and gave me a tour right off the bat. Then we sat down and she asked me about my availability, and then told me about the company. Really great benefits, 401k, pay advancements as you learn more, all vet care for your own pet at cost... Sounds great right? Well, their starting salary is MUCH less than I can afford to take. (I had someone else do the number crunching for me, as I've already bombed a math test, lol) With the 45 minute commute each way, and paying Oregon taxes, even though what they're paying me is more than what I'm making now hourly, I still get commission, and a lot of times it works out to more than the hourly rate the vet clinic is paying.
It's a fantastic opportunity though... and they're perfectly willing to work around both me phasing out my classes at my store, as well as my school schedule once I start going... I just don't know if I can afford the rate. So I made an appointment with the owner of the clinic to see if he would be willing to give me more money based on the experience I have. I've worked in a vet clinic before, have a year of vet tech study under my belt, and I train dogs... this should have some merit for a higher starting salary, don't you think? We'll see how that works out.
