I saved a life today....

I know that sparrows are a nuisance, they poop on your nice clean cars, there are too many of them and they make a lot of noise, but they are living creatures and they shouldn't be tortured to death....

So today I saved a baby bird. I was taking Wesley out, and I saw a cat bouncing around by the stairs to my neigbors apartment. Then I heard a baby bird squawking, so I went over to investigate, and there was this little bird hopping around trying to get away from this cat that was batting him around. I scared the cat away and scooped up the scared little bird. I brought him into my apartment and checked him out. The inside of his wing was swollen and red, possibly broken.

I took this opportunity to break my "bird dog" of the instinct to stalk, hunt or attack birds. I know he's supposed to be a bird dog, but I'm not a hunter and I don't want my dog to kill any animal. So I made him submit to the bird, telling him that the bird is "above him" and he's to ignore the bird.

Once he lost interest in checking out the bird, then he was allowed to inspect it, because the prey drive was removed, at least for this bird.

Then, since he and the bird were getting along so famously, I had some fun with it... Because I can.

I took the bird to work with me, not knowing what to do to care for him. I didn't plan on keeping him, nor had I any idea what to feed him or how to care for his damaged wing. I found out that there's a lady in Camas who rehabilitates wild birds, so I called her up and she told me how to keep him comfortable till she arrived. She came down a couple hours later and thanked me for saving the bird. She recognised the type of bird right off the bat, approximate age, and knew just what to feed him. He's going to be ok, and he's in good hands. I feel pretty good about the whole thing.

Oh and here's something else random that I found out. Apparently the pet store at our local mall, sells ALLIGATORS to people! What the hell is wrong with those people?! Real, live alligators that get to be like 12 feet long. Although the baby alligator was incredibly cute and I got to hold him... that's just not the kind of pet most people should have! I swear I hate mall pet stores. They really will sell anything to make money.

Noodle would have eaten that bird. How exactly do you get a dog to submit to a prey animal?? My parakeet would love to know!

What an awesome story! Props to you.

And I'm sure Stoli and Hobie would have eaten him too.
